A twin town with two sets of rules
Tweed Heads and Coolangatta run into each other so closely that plenty of people don’t notice where one ends. For electrical work, though, the line matters. Anything on the NSW side is done under the appropriate NSW licence, meets the local network requirements of Essential Energy, and finishes with a NSW Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. We look after both states, so you don’t need a different electrician depending on which side of the street you’re on.
It also matters for booking. From October to April, NSW is on daylight saving and Queensland isn’t. We’ll always confirm your appointment in Tweed time.
Unit blocks and older apartments
The streets around Wharf Street, the Jack Evans Boat Harbour and up towards Point Danger hold a lot of 1970s and 1980s walk-up units and mid-rise apartments. Common issues we find:
- Original fuse boards in units with no safety switch protection
- Kitchens and bathrooms that have been renovated with more appliances than the old circuits were designed for
- Tired common area lighting, stairwell lights on old timers, and emergency lighting that hasn’t been tested
- Corroded balcony fittings and power points from constant sea air

Riverfront homes and older cottages
Away from the towers, Tweed Heads has older fibro and brick homes, some on the Tweed River and Terranora Inlet. Waterfront properties often want lighting and power out to jetties, pontoons and boat sheds. That gear lives in the worst possible conditions for electrical equipment, so we use sealed outlets, the right cable and RCD protection, and mount things where spray and king tides can’t reach them.
Older cottages tend to have limited power points, extension leads doing the job of proper circuits, and light fittings that were never rated for the humidity. We can add power points where you actually need them and replace fittings with ones made for coastal conditions.
Shops, cafés and clubs
Tweed Heads has a busy commercial side, from strip shops and medical suites to hospitality venues that trade most of the day and night. For these businesses we do fit-outs, lighting upgrades, test and tag, and fault finding when something trips mid-service. We can work early or after close to keep disruption down.
Smoke alarms in Tweed Heads
If you’ve bought or rented on the Gold Coast, you may know the Queensland requirements. NSW is different. The NSW minimum for homes is at least one working smoke alarm on each level, and landlords have specific duties to keep them working.
