Mountain living, mountain wiring
Many homes on the mountain are older timber houses, cottages and extended farmhouses, alongside newer homes built for the views. Older properties often have original wiring, patched switchboards and extensions added by several owners over the decades. We find ceramic fuses, cloth-covered cabling and outdoor circuits without safety switch protection more often here than in the suburbs below.
An electrical safety inspection is a good first step, especially after buying. We report on what is unsafe, what is ageing and what can stay, so you can plan upgrades in a sensible order.
Water, pumps and tanks
Much of the mountain relies on rainwater tanks, with pressure pumps supplying the house. When a pump stops, so does the water. We diagnose and repair pump circuits, replace damaged cabling, add proper isolation and weatherproof enclosures, and run new circuits to tanks and bores. Long distances between house and pump are common, so we size cable to avoid voltage drop.
Storms, trees and outages
The mountain’s tall trees and exposed ridges make it one of the most storm-affected places in the region. Falling branches bring down service lines, and lightning surges damage pumps, inverters and electronics. Outages can last longer up here than on the coast.
Generator connections
Plenty of mountain households keep a generator. Connecting one to a house must be done safely, through an approved inlet and changeover switch installed by a licensed electrician, so power cannot feed back into the network and endanger line workers. Never plug a generator into a power point. We install inlets and changeover switches so you can run essential circuits like the fridge, pump and lights.
Surge protection
Surge protection at the switchboard reduces the risk of damage from network surges, and is worth fitting on homes with solar, pumps and electronics. Our storm season safety guide has more.
Private poles and long service runs
Larger blocks often have overhead lines on private poles or long underground runs to the house and sheds. Private poles are generally the owner’s responsibility, and poles in damp rainforest conditions can deteriorate. If a pole is leaning or trees are growing into the lines, have it checked.
Tourism and hospitality businesses
Gallery Walk, the wineries, cafes and a large number of B&Bs and holiday cottages form a big part of the mountain’s economy. Accommodation providers need compliant smoke alarms, working exit lighting where required, and fast repairs between bookings. We provide maintenance, fault finding and upgrades, planned around guests and trading.
Damp and cool conditions
Mist, cloud and rain keep the mountain damp for long stretches. Moisture gets into outdoor fittings, garden lighting and shed wiring, causing nuisance tripping. We use weatherproof fittings and enclosures, and seal outdoor connections properly.
