Working at the border
Coolangatta and Tweed Heads function as one town, but they sit under different state rules. Queensland work is regulated by the Electrical Safety Office and New South Wales work by NSW Fair Trading, with different licensing, notification and paperwork requirements. There are small practical differences too. Smoke alarm rules differ between the states, and New South Wales runs daylight saving in summer while Queensland doesn’t, which catches people out when booking a time.

Apartments and strata buildings
Coolangatta’s beachfront is lined with apartment towers and mid-rise blocks, many used for holiday letting. Strata buildings need regular electrical care, and most of what we do for them falls into a few areas:
- Emergency and exit lighting testing and repairs to AS/NZS 2293
- Common area, carpark and pool lighting, often upgraded to LED to reduce running costs
- Main switchroom inspections and thermal imaging of boards
- Repairs to salt-damaged balcony and external fittings

Hospitality and holiday accommodation
Coolangatta’s streets are full of cafes, bars, restaurants and surf shops, and they depend on reliable power through the busy holiday periods. Venue work includes kitchen circuits, lighting, extra capacity for equipment and test and tag for staff areas. For holiday accommodation, the priorities are smoke alarm compliance, safety switches and fast repairs so rooms don’t sit empty. We plan work around bookings and trading hours wherever we can.
Homes on the hill
Behind the beachfront, the hillside streets rising toward Point Danger and above Kirra hold a mix of older houses and newer homes built to catch the views. Older homes here often have original switchboards and wiring that has been added to over decades, while the newer ones tend to want more lighting, outdoor power and home automation. A switchboard upgrade is often the first step for the older houses.
The salt problem, again
If there’s one theme across every Coolangatta job, it’s corrosion. Point Danger and the headlands take the full force of onshore winds and salt spray. Fittings that would last many years inland can fail within a few seasons here. We select gear and installation methods with that in mind and recommend an annual check of anything exposed to the weather.
Switchboards in external meter boxes are worth a look too. Rust on the enclosure, loose terminals and failed seals can let moisture in, and that’s when nuisance tripping and burnt connections start. If your board is showing its age, get it checked before summer storm season.
