A suburb of homes, not hotels
Compared with Byron’s town centre, Suffolk Park is mostly homes. You’ll see 1970s and 1980s brick and fibro houses, renovated beach homes and some newer builds. Many have been extended over the years, and many have a second dwelling out the back. That means the electrical systems have often been stretched well past what they were designed for.
Signs of a stretched system are easy to spot once you know them: lights that dim when the air conditioner starts, a safety switch that trips when the kettle and heater run together, or power boards daisy-chained behind the TV. None of these should be ignored, and most have a straightforward fix.
Granny flats, studios and second dwellings
With housing in the Byron Shire so tight, a lot of Suffolk Park properties now have a granny flat, a converted garage or a backyard studio. From an electrical point of view, that brings a few common questions:
- Is the existing supply big enough for two households?
- Should the second dwelling have its own sub-board?
- How should the cable be run underground to reach it?
- Does it need its own smoke alarms, safety switches and hot water circuit?

Close to the beach
Suffolk Park backs onto Tallow Beach and the national park, and many homes are only a short walk from the sand. Salt air, sand and humidity take their toll on outdoor gear. We regularly replace corroded outdoor power points, rusted wall lights and tired verandah fans. Choosing coastal-rated products and putting them in sheltered spots makes them last longer.
Lighting, fans and the everyday jobs
